Pharmacotherapy: A Pathophysiologic Approach 8th Edition by Joseph DiPiro, Robert L. Talbert, Gary Yee and Gary Matzke provides equips readers with the knowledge base and confidence to provide the highest quality of patient care. Pathophysiologic Approach is unmatched in its ability to help students develop a mastery of evidence-based medicine for optimum patient outcomes.
The eighth edition will feature the addition of SI units throughout and an increased number of global examples and clinical questions. This text continues its long-standing tradition of stimulating students to achieve a higher level of learning while offering unparalleled guidance in the development of pharmaceutical care plans.
The book includes a wealth of treatment algorithms, principles of pharmacotherapy, and extensive figures and tables that serve to enhance the readability of the text and make the information easy to use. When it comes to helping you develop a mastery of evidence-based medicine for optimal patient outcomes, no book can match this text. Like the discipline it covers, the scope of this trusted resource goes beyond drug indications and dosages to include the initial selection, proper administration, and monitoring of drugs.
This edition adds six new chapters and covers a wide variety of disease states. Novel topics reflect the evolving practice of medicine and include palliative care, health literacy, cultural competency and medication safety. Learning strategies that emphasize important concepts are used throughout. Each section opens with key concepts, which highlight the most critical information.
Charts and flow algorithms present information in a way that can be easily referenced and applied in clinical practice. For example, the osteoporosis chapter covers dosing, adverse effects, and drug interactions clearly outlined in table format. A section in each chapter of clinical controversies highlights topics that are currently being debated in practice. These topics are well chosen, are clinically relevant, and include how healthcare practitioners are handling these issues in practice.
Finally, the book is well referenced with over 100 references for each chapter, which directs readers to further information if needed. As a clinical assistant professor of pharmacy, I find the book clearly written, as well as thorough and current. However, students sometimes describe the information as dense, and the authors have addressed this concern by summarizing topics more succinctly than in previous editions.
I think they have succeeded, and the change is noticeable when perusing topics and it will help students and newer practitioners grasp important concepts more easily. This is a gold standard reference in pharmacy and the information it provides equips readers with the knowledge base and confidence to provide the highest quality of patient care.
